Jennifer Deyton, Senior Partner
Jennifer Deyton has a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Utah and a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies degree from Duke University. Before accepting a position with Arthritis & Rheumatism (A&R) at Duke University, she worked in the Public Affairs Department for the North Carolina Medical Board. After working for A&R for five years, she joined forces with Julie Nash to develop and improve upon the role of the Managing Editor. From there, her career in publishing flourished into a successful and innovative company. She also serves as a Board Member for the International Society for Managing and Technical Editors and is very committed to peer review management. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family, reading and traveling.

Julie Nash, Senior Partner
Julie Nash has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism from the Pennsylvania State University and a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies degree from Duke University. She was an award-winning journalist in Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania and North Carolina before becoming an assistant editor with Arthritis & Rheumatism (A&R) in May 2000. After working on A&R and other titles for several years, she founded J&J Editorial with partner Jennifer Deyton. Julie is involved with the International Society of Managing and Technical Editors (ISMTE) and is dedicated to professionalizing the job of managing editor. When not working, Julie enjoys traveling, eating at interesting restaurants, listening to music, reading and spending time with her husband and two children.

Brittany White, Senior Managing Editor
Brittany graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2008 with degrees in Anthropology and Linguistics, after which she spent the summer in New York City studying the publishing industry. Prior to joining the J&J team in 2010, her publishing experience included serving in editorial positions at a regional NC lifestyle magazine and a regional, multi-state business media company. Her free time is dedicated to cycling, traveling with friends and family, freelance writing and tending to her fish tank of African cichlids.

Alex Slater, Senior Managing Editor
A North Carolina native, Alex graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill earning a degree in English with a Minor in Chemistry. In his senior year, Alex helped launch the second edition of a new undergraduate publication at UNC, Carolina Scientific. As a Staff writer and Production Staff member he contributed an article covering new research at UNC's Center for Genomics and Society. Shortly after graduation, Alex was glad to discover a new opportunity in scholarly scientific publishing by joining the team at J&J.

Sarah Szatkowski, Senior Managing Editor
Sarah has a Bachelor's degree in Marketing and English from the College of William and Mary. She currently works on publications for the BMJ Group and the American Chemical Society. Prior to joining J&J Editorial, she worked for the University of North Carolina. In her spare time, Sarah enjoys playing and coaching soccer.

Meghann Knowles, Managing Editor
Meghann joined J&J Editorial in January 2009. Prior to joining the J&J Editorial team, she worked as a Medical Editor for NBC Universal. Meghann has over seven years of publishing industry experience, the majority of which has focused on medical content. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Writing and Media from Loyola College in Maryland. In her spare time she enjoys cooking, gardening, taking her dog to the park and playing golf with her husband.

Natalia Figueroa, Managing Editor
Natalia was born and raised in Puerto Rico. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Puerto Rico in 2001. In 2002, she moved to Arlington, Virginia to work for the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). While employed at the USPTO, she attended George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and received a Master of Science degree in 2006. Later that year, she moved to Holly Springs, North Carolina with her husband where she works for J&J Editorial. She currently works on publications for the British Medical Journal Group.

Susan Uppena, Managing Editor
Susan Uppena has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business with a Marketing Concentration from North Carolina State University. After working as the administrative manager for the Section Head of the Department of Public Health Sciences of Wake Forest School of Medicine, Susan moved on to various key administrative positions. These included Large Group Administrator for United Health Care, Aerospace Sales Administrator for Purolator Facet Inc., Greensboro, NC, and Account Executive of Financial Markets for World Access Services Corporation in Richmond, VA. Susan is a member of the International Society of Managing and Technical Editors (ISMTE) and resides in Raleigh, NC. Free time always includes her three active daughters and their abundant extracurricular activities.

Heather Blasco, Managing Editor
Heather has had many positions in journalism ranging from business press magazines to newspapers and now to scholarly, peer-reviewed journals. After working on a single journal since 2003, Heather joined J&J in 2010 to work on a number of journals for the British Medical Journal and the American Chemical Society. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism from Ohio University and a Master of Library Science from Indiana University. She stays connected to the library field by working occassionally as a media specialist at an elementary school. When not working on the computer or at the library, Heather can be found chauffering her two young daughters throughout Garner, North Carolina, to their ice skating and dance classes. Both North Carolina transplants, Heather and her husband enjoy traveling with their kids to visit their families in San Diego and Ohio.

Bill Fisher, Managing Editor
After graduating from the University of North Carolina Asheville in 2010 with degrees in Literature and Classical Studies, Bill left the mountains to join the team at J&J Editorial. He currently works on publications for the BMJ Group. During his time at UNC Asheville, Bill led several student organizations while also working as a research assistant for the Chemistry department. He currently resides in Raleigh where he can be found reading, playing wiffle ball, and blogging on his typewriter.

Sarah Wolper, Managing Editor
Sarah was born and raised in Alpharetta, Georgia. Following in her parents' footsteps, she attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, graduating in May 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism & Mass Communications, and a minor in Spanish. Shortly after graduation, she joined the J&J team and currently works on titles for the BMJ Group. In her spare time, Sarah enjoys reading (particularly anything by Stephen King), cooking, cross stitching, playing board games and bar trivia, and watching old movies at Chapel Hill's Varsity Theater. She finds writing about herself in the third person to be horribly awkward.

Corrie Williams, Editorial Assistant
After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Georgia and Master of Science degree in Biology from Appalachian State University, Corrie started teaching the sciences in the North Carolina public schools and at Appalachian State University. After teaching for 8 years, she shifted gears to publishing and started work for J&J Editorial. She currently focuses on editorial work for the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

Tom Colihan, Editorial Assistant
After receiving his Bachelor's degree in Social Psychology from York College of Pennsylvania in 2002, Tom moved to Blacksburg, Virginia where he lived for three years while studying city planning and martial arts. In 2007 he moved from the mountains of Southwest Virginia to Washington D.C. and started on the publishing path as an Editorial Coordinator for the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). After three years of living in the Atlas District and learning the nuances of peer review management from the good folks at PNAS, he decided to make the move down to Carrboro, N.C. and embark on a new learning experience with J&J Editorial. When not at work, Tom can be found hiking, reading, and traveling.

Michelle English, Editorial Assistant
After graduating from the State University of New York at Geneseo with BA degrees in Philosophy and English, Michelle moved to Philadelphia to pursue a dual masters in English and Publishing at Rosemont College. During grad school Michelle developed a strong interest in scholarly publishing and wrote her thesis on publishing industry ethics. Before joining J&J, Michelle was a project editor at a textbook production company where she worked mainly on college-level science textbooks. She lives in Carrboro, North Carolina with her husband and their American Foxhound, Mabel. Michelle enjoys traveling, spending time with family, and cooking elaborate meals.

Samantha Lisk, Editorial Assistant
Samantha graduated Magna Cum Laude from Campbell University in 2010 with a Bachelor's degree in English and a minor in Spanish. She become interested in publishing while at Campbell as a staff member of The Lyricist, Campbell's creative writing magazine, of which she eventually became editor. She also completed two international internships in London prior to graduation, one of which was an editorial internship at the arts and entertainment magazine for international visitors known as This Is London. In her spare time she enjoys reading, writing, being outdoors, and playing with her dog.

Jailyn Moreland, Editorial Assistant
Jailyn graduated from the University of Iowa in 2009 with a Master of Arts in Literature and six years of teaching experience. Before joining J&J, she served two years with the NC LiteracyCorps, tutoring native and non-native speakers in the vagaries of English phonetics and grammar. For Jailyn, working with J&J strikes a perfect balance between her commitment to service and to scholarship. When not singularly focused on this exciting new career, Jailyn also enjoys knitting seasonally, handcrafting perpetually, and relaxing in the sunshine.

Emily Spence, Editorial Assistant
Emily Graduated from NC State University in 2010 with a BA in World Literature and a double minor in French and Technical Writing. Before leaving school, Emily held internships at both the NC Museum of History as well as Siemens Healthcare. She landed at J&J Editorial in May 2011 and is enjoying learning about academic publishing. She currently works with PLoS ONE, Pathogens, and Neglected Tropical Diseases. Emily currently resides in Raleigh and enjoys reading, baking, and video games.

Gillie Logan, Editorial Assistant
A recent graduate of the University of North Carolina at Asheville, Gillie holds a Bachelor of Arts in Literature and French. Interested in the publishing world and academic writing, Gillie left Asheville to join team J&J and currently works on tasks for PLoS Biology, PLoS Computational Biology, and PLoS Genetics. While in a constant pursuit for new and exciting hobbies, Gillie can often be found chowing down ethnic food, biking, running and reading. She currently lives in Durham and is working on creating her own telescope.

Linda Cozzens, Editorial Assistant
Linda Cozzens has more than 10 years of progressive experience as a Senior Executive Administrative Assistant. She works for J&J Editorial as a Data Specialist. Linda has a second career as a Reserve Officer with the Durham Police Department. She lives in Holly Springs, North Carolina with her husband of 13 years and her son, Kyle.

Heather Demke, Editorial Assistant
While working on her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Utah, Heather began working in 2001 as an Editorial Assistant for the Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS). After graduating in 2002, she started working as the Editorial Assistant for the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Organic Chemistry (JOC) . After a few years with JOC and JACS, she started working for J&J Editorial in 2009. She currently focuses on editorial work for the Journal of the American Chemical Society. In her free time, she loves spending time outdoors with her husband and two sweet little boys.
